Winter Solstice

Within the Cavnod, the elliptical path followed by the Earth around the Sun, in addition to the angle of the the Earth with respect to the Sun, determines the height to which the Sun rises above the horizon on any particular day. As winter approaches the northern hemisphere on Earth the Sun rises to a lower height each day (the zenith occurring a noon), until the Earth reaches that point in its orbit where the angle of the Earth's axis with respect to the Sun results in higher elevations with each successive day. The day in which the Sun reaches its lowest height above the horizon is the Winter Solstice. The Sun appears to sit still for a period of three days before higher elevations become discernable to the human eye, presenting a period of time that is interepreted mythologically in spritualities around the world as a point for some deity descends into a form of underworld for three days and then arises with new life. This celestial phenomenon provides the architipal foundation for symbols relating the the beginning and ending of natural cycles of birth and death. ( Web Reference )
