Sex
( Top of Page ) When the Henin differentiated from the Inoleth, the universal "one", evolving into twelve separate, yet enmeshed, entities, they sought to heighten the experience of their separateness by finding ways to connect with each other through physical means, especially after Cren placed the Biola Sea upon the Sevid ( Eternal Plane ) and constructed islands upon it (see Adeled), one for each of the Henin in their own region of the Biola Sea. A variety of physical means were tried, over many Henin Breaths, to establish a mutually satisfying and pleasurable experience, but it was not until the Intredu was formed between Cren, Treven and Hesbrid, that physical affection was raised to a level sufficient to capture the spirits of all of the Henin. Each of the Intredu contributed a significant piece to the experience of affection between the three of them:
On Earth we would eventually call these physical attributes a "penis" (the aggressive) and "vulva" (the receptive) respectively. And in turn, "masculine" and "feminine". Six of the Henin were self-identified as "feminine": Six of the Henin were self-identified as "masculine": Once the Henin had differentiated from the Inoleth and had taken on physical bodies. their gender identity resulted in the evolution of corresponding 'aggressive' and 'receptive' genitals, but the nature of the relationships that they engaged in did not necessarily follow straightforward male/female aggressive/receptive pattern. Nor did they consistently pair up into exclusive, intimate partnerships, as much of human culture would seem to imply was "natural". Although the intimate relationships between the Henin were not necessarily permanent, there were a number of relationships which tended to define the manner in which they interacted with each other:
Although on Earth, Sex was considered to be primarily a means of reproduction and secondarily a means of expressing affection or experiencing "pleasure", on Addewid, sex was primarily a means of sharing one's Spirit. The intimacy, and all of the pleasure, joy and ecstasy that comes with it, was the by-product of this Spirit-Sharing that took place. Spirit, being one of the four principle Addewin Elements, plays a significant role in how all life forms relate to each other. This is no different with Sex. As a matter of fact, this process of Spirit-Sharing, known as Cuvran, provides the foundation for much of what is know as "Sex" within Addewid and it archetypally established the model for Sex and Reproduction on Earth. One aspect of Cuvran relates to the Gender Identity and the Gender Manifestation of a Life Form within the Inoleth. The Gender Identity reflects the Spiritual State of a Life Form (i.e. "I feel like a male" or "I relate to my world as a female"). The Gender Manifestation, on the other hand, relates to the physical characteristics of the Life Form's body with respect to Genitalia, which is the physical means of expressing Cuvran. Cuvran can be expressed from two perspectives, both of which are equal but different in subtle, yet profound ways: A potentially useful metaphore for illustrating the gender-context of Cuvran would be the drawing of an image on a sheet of paper with a pencil. The pencil can be "moved" across the paper with either one of two actions by a grasping hand: pushing and pulling. The complete image can be accomplished just as effectively with a "pulling" motion as it can be with a "pushing" motion. Or the hand can use both orientations of "pushing" and "pulling" while presenting the image. The end result is the same, but the experience of drawing the image is different. Within Cuvran, a similar difference is experienced with respect to "masculine" and "feminine" spirit-sharing. The "pushing" of the pencil across the paper is somewhat analogous to "Spirit Giving" and the "pulling" of the pencil across the paper would correspond to "Spirit Receiving". All Addewin Life Forms possess spirit and all are capable of Spirit Giving and Spirit Receiving, but some Life Forms are predisposed to Spirit Giving and others are predisposed to Spirit Receiving. On Addewid a Life Form's Cuvran orientation would result in the formation of genitals matching that orientation. So a Spirit Receiving Life Form would receive Female genitalia and a Spirit Giving Life Form would receive Masculine genitalia. Life Forms with an equal orientation towards both Spirit Giving and Spirit Receiving would develope both Feminine and Masculine genitalia, thus being a Hermaphroditic Life Form. Unfortunately, these two facets of Cuvran evolved into inferior experiences within the Cavnod on Earth. "Giving" became associated with aggression, initiative and creativity. It was usurped by the military mindset that became so pervasive within Humanity. Receiving became associated with passiveness, yielding and submission. This use and abuse of Ruvel became a point of grave concern for the Intredu. The original intent and expression of Cuvran within Addewid, as put in place by the Intredu, was that it could take place in several general permutations:
